Canberra, is the Capital City of Australia, but IS NOT, an "International Gateway" via air. By air it is best accessed from Sydney or Melbourne by two(2) domestic carriers.
By car, it is about 3 hours south of Sydney, and about 7 hours north of Melbourne.
Where to Stay?
Canberra is a City divided by "Lake Burley Griffin", with ther CBD on the Northside of the Lake, and the Government Precinct on the southern side.
Both the CBD and Government Precinct is about 10km(6miles) from the Airport.
The race starts near the Government Precinct in the suburb of "Telopea", so for accommodation, the suburbs of Telopea, Barton, Kingston or Manuka(which have ample accommodation and restaurants) are within walking distance of the start.(And attractions such as, the "New" Parliament House, the "Old" Parliament, The National Gallery etc etc)
This is arguably one of the most scenic courses in Australia(If not the world).
It starts with an 11km(7mile), loop through parklands which circles the New Parliament House, and runs across the forecourt of the Old Parliament. The course then follows a double loop of about 16km(10mile) each, which crosses Lake Burley Griffin twice/lap, and offers views of the Lake and most of the Canberra iconic landmarks.
The course is here:
There is a "Pre-race Pasta Party", generally on the Saturday Night, and an informal "post race drinks" session at the Sponsors Hotel.(See official webpage for details).
The race also has a "mini-expo", at Race head-quarters on the Saturday Afternoon.
In 2008, the Marathon had 1041 Finishers.
Associated Races
As with most Australian Marathons, there are "Associated Races", and in Canberra these races are held both on the Raceday and on the day before(Saturday).
On the Saturday Afternoon, there are both a 5km and 10km road races.
On raceday, you have the option of running a 50km, inconjunction with the Marathon, you have the option of extending the distance to 50km(about 30miles), but this preference must be indicated at the time of entry.
Bruces Comment
I've run this race 4 or 5 times since 1981, and as I said above, it is one of the best courses I have run.
I have resisted the temptation to indicate the degree of difficultly of the course, because as with beauty, its "in the eye of the beholder", but I found the course, 'Not Flat, but not very challenging, except for a hill out near the "Black Mountain" turnaround which must be negotiated twice, and on the last lap, it is at about the 34km(21 mile) mark, and it will certainly get your attention!"
Other things to do!
If you are going to run this race, then enjoy the trip, and allow an extra few days.
Canberra and its nearby surrounds have lots of attractions for all people.
And here are some of them on Video:
Canberra is also only 2 hours drive from both the Snow Fields(but it is generally too early in the year for suitable Ski snow), and 2 hours from some great surf beaches.
If you drive, you can return to Sydney via the south coast road through Bateman's Bay and Wollongong. And Melbourne can also be reached via Bateman's Bay and Eden, or via driving over the "Alps", via Cooma.
Future Race Dates?
This race is normally held on one of the 1st three(3) week-ends in April, but never on the Easter Week-end, so the race date depends on when Easter falls, but as with all races, please get the date confirmed by the race director before booking and confirming you travel and accommodation arrangements.
But the official webpage currently gives us the following future dates:
10th April 2011
