Hobart, is the Capital, of Australia's Island State of Tasmania, and is served by all three(3) of Australia's domestic airlines, but best accessed from Sydney or Melbourne.
The CBD area is best, and most of Hobarts Tourist attractions are with in walking distance of the CBD.
Please book early, as early January is peak holiday time in Hobart, and accommodation(and rental cars), can become difficult to get at this time of the year.
The CBD is about 25km(15miles) from the Airport, and about 20km(13 miles) from the race start.
Its best to take a Taxi or your rental car to the Start/Finish, which is in the Cadbury's Chocolate factory complex.(If you take a cab, remember to take your cellphone, as you will need to phone for a cab to get you back to your hotel)
The course has about a 2km run from the factory out to the main road, then its a double 'out and back' along the main road and then a Motorway, and then private roads behind a race course, before returning to the finish line.
In 2008, there were 88 Finishers
Associated Races
As with most Australian Marathons, there are "Associated Races", and on race morning, inconjuction with the Marathon, there is a 1.25km, 5km and Half Marathon(See webpage for details)
In 2008, the Half Marathon had 216 finishers
Bruces Comment
I've run this race twice(2000 & 2006), and with the race set in one of Australia's most beautiful city's, I am disappointed with the course, and its views.
Furthermore, the 'Motorway Section', although only short, is dangerous, and I'm surprised that a race is allowed on a Motorway with so little protection for 'tired runners'.
I've put this race in the category:
"Only to be run, if you need to run a Marathon in Tasmania and in January(As Marathons this time of the year in Australia are a bit thin on the ground).
On the plus side, the weather is generally great, and Hobart/Tasmania is a great place for a holiday!
I have resisted the temptation to indicate the degree of difficultly of the course, because as with beauty, its "in the eye of the beholder", but I found the course, 'Not Flat, but not very challenging"
Other things to do!
If you are going to run this race, then enjoy the trip, and allow an extra few days.
Tasmania is known as "The Holiday Isle", so enjoy it while you are there.
To get the most out of the trip, I suggest a Self-Drive/Accommodation package, but allow about 6 to 7 days to "do a lap" of Tasmania.
Most travel agents sell these packages, but as I said above, "book early", as its peak season.
Here is a 'Tourist's Video' of Hobart for you to enjoy:
And here is a video, of "Tasmania in Spring":
Future Race Dates?
This race is normally the 1st or 2nd Sunday in January every year, but as with all races, please get the date confirmed by the race director before booking and confirming you travel and accommodation arrangements
